What started as a collection of chilled out, half-baked song ideas from various sessions in 2017, LesMoss finally took action to finish the “Loosestems” idea in late-2019, early-2020. Unfortunately the pandemic hit, and so the album wasn’t actually finished in Spring 2020 as originally intended. Instead, and maybe more true to the project’s form, LesMoss finished the project by passing loosie tracks back and forth over the year, mixing and arranging the album via Zoom calls. The project acts as a meandering mood board, filled by funky bass lines, key loops, and jazzy riffs. Potatohead People’s Mellow Fantasy and J Dilla’s Welcome 2 Detroit come to mind when listening to Loosestems, however, there’s not quite a perfect comparison as the project by its very nature maintains a unique identity as an instrumental beat tape first and foremost, with no vocal features except for the elusive protagonist’s shouts and high reactions.
LesMoss is the brainchild of Portland musicians iNDIGO and AED. Loosestems, their latest effort, is released on It’s Future Time, an independent collective / label focused on writing songs and playing instruments. Most of the tracks in this collection started out as simple looped-out starts by iNDIGO, that then AED played various live instruments to fill out the sonic pallet, vibe, and arrangement. What else LesMoss has in store for us is unknown, but we do know it will be a laid back, tantalizing trip to the furthest points of the galaxy and back.
Produced, performed, engineered, and mixed by iNDIGO and AED (AKA LesMoss). Additional instrumentation by Sunday Grip on Tracks 1 and 7. Additional instrumentation by Daren Todd on Track 13. Mastered by Ryan Foster for Foster Mastering.
